BABON is an instrumental band from Indonesia, founded by Rayi, Wahyudi, and later joined by Rori. The group blends traditional Indonesian genres such as keroncong and dangdut with global influences ranging from Middle Eastern grooves, Latin, Spaghetti Western to Afro-funk, creating a rich, genre-defying sound they describe as “Tropical Desert” music.
Rayi and Wahyudi first connected as high school friends before continuing their studies together in Melbourne, where they were deeply influenced by the city’s diverse world music and instrumental scenes. Their shared passion for music evolved alongside their involvement in sustainable development projects focused on agroforestry, which brought them closer to pressing environmental issues. This experience inspired them to craft music that not only explores complex yet familiar sonic textures but also tells stories of ecological degradation and the human struggles intertwined with it.
Rori later joined the band, filling a melodic gap with his expressive guitar work and further enhancing the band’s sonic depth. In live performances, BABON expands to a powerful seven-piece ensemble, delivering immersive, narrative-driven sets that explore the tension between nature, society, and survival.
